Grosvenor Gallery, in collaboration with Canvas Gallery, Karachi, will present The Rising Crescendo of the Band Baja, a new body of work by Pakistani artist Adeela Suleman.The exhibition takes the South Asian band baja as its starting point, focusing on the spectacle of drummers, trumpeters and uniformed bandsmen. In Suleman’s works, these familiar figures appear within richly imagined settings populated by flowers, foliage and wild animals, creating scenes that are both celebratory and theatrical.
Working across repoussé metalwork and textiles, Suleman draws on decorative and craft traditions while exploring broader themes of ceremony, authority, resistance and collective memory. The elaborate surfaces and painstaking detail of the works sit alongside narratives that address power and violence, giving the seemingly festive imagery a more complex and unsettling dimension.
The exhibition will open with a private view on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, from 6 to 8 pm.Suleman will also lead an artist walkthrough on Saturday, 17 October at 3 pm, offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about the new works and the ideas behind the exhibition.
