Welcome to the March/ April issue

Ramadan arrives each year with a quiet insistence on reflection. It is therefore fitting that this March–April issue of ArtNow turns its attention to the art of the written line, Calligraphy.

Calligraphy has historically occupied a central place in the artistic traditions of Muslim cultures, where the act of writing became a form of reverence.

This issue brings together voices that approach calligraphy from multiple vantage points—historical, critical, and contemporary—reflecting on how the written form continues to resonate within today’s artistic landscape.

Our Editor, Quddus Mirza reflects on the enduring presence of calligraphy within the broader discourse of art, examining how the written word navigates the space between tradition and modernity.

Haroon Shuaib’s essay delves into the visual and conceptual dimensions of calligraphy of the artists from Balochistan, considering how artists interpret script as both text and form. Jabeen Qadri offers a historical lens, tracing the development of calligraphic practices in Pakistan and situating them within larger cultural and artistic narratives.

Alizeh Afzal discusses the profound development of calligraphy within the region and sheds light on the works of the modern calligraphers.

Alongside these essays, the issue also foregrounds visual storytelling. Photo essays by Alizeh Afzal bring attention to the textures and environments in which art and everyday life intersect, reminding us that visual culture often unfolds beyond the walls of the gallery.

Two artist profiles further extend the conversation. Rashid Arshad Ahmed’s practice engages with modern calligraphy, exploring how the language of script can be reimagined within contemporary frameworks. Meanwhile, Sumbul Natalia’s profile of Muhammad Ali Talpur offers insight into an artist whose work, though rooted in abstraction, echoes the discipline and meditative quality of the calligraphic line.

Reviews from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad are also included in the edition to keep our readers tuned to the art happenings around the country.

My Team and I wish our esteemed readers a very Happy Eid in advance.
