The most revolutionary moment in the development of painting, the dadaist and poet Tristan Tzara called the invention of collage, meaning the fundamental break with established forms of artistic representation. In the collage determining technical procedures, in the gluing (French coller), scratching, cutting, tearing, folding, assembling, assembling, decomposing, etc. has a radical potential. While the paper collés of the cubists fed on the used, the rejected and the supposedly banal, today we are swarming around the often reproduced, reformatted and re-edited copies of a constantly growing digital debris. The current focus of the Fotogalerie Wien presents in four exhibitions a broad spectrum of methods and procedures of collage in contemporary photography and video art. The narrative and autopoetic strengths of this art form as well as its innovative power become visible as a fundamental trait emerging in the use of new technologies or in spatial-sculptural expansions. The image drifts always direct anarchic, random and play-driven energies.
The final exhibition of the focus COLLAGE confronts two artistic positions, which - despite the diversity of the resources used - the interest in the cross-media investigation of space from a social, cultural and perceptual theory perspective. To what extent does the (in) simultaneity of processes and (historical) events affect their representability? Which mechanisms and agreements direct our perception? In the works of Larcher and Pamminger, it is the slightest shift in perspective that shakes the ways of seeing and changes meaning. Their space (de-) constructions represent orders whose parts are not merely to be read as representations, such as the outside world, but obey their own grammars: artistic languages that draw from the real - and its media translations - condensing it and thereby to create infinitely continuous (thought) spaces.
