‘Wearable Variable’, a four-person show opens at Canvas Gallery on Tuesday, 8th September 2020, from 2 pm – 7 pm. Please note that the opening time is extended to avoid congestion. We encourage all visitors to maintain social distancing protocol for a safer viewing experience.
Bushra Waqas Khan (@bushrawaqaskhan), Marium Agha (@studiomariumagha), Masuma Halai Khwaja (@masuma.khwaja) and Sara Mahmood (@saramahmoodmuzzumil) explore narratives regarding identity in relation to the body as a repository of cultural and social expression, through multidisciplinary approaches and diverse mediums, incorporating printmaking, embroidery, textiles and installation in a range of two and three-dimensional works. Each artist lends themselves to an experimental trajectory exploring the ramifications of self-expression through visual culture, blurring boundaries between raw materials, utilitarianism and creative conception, through an exciting re-imagining of the body as canvas and adornment as an exhibition of the variable self.
Khan re purposes legal affidavit paper into miniature ensembles through printmaking, literally and figuratively reshaping legally binding documents into wearable tales, while Halai employs detailed embroidery to highlight Sub-Continental politics of conflict and separation. Agha’s amalgamation of mixed-media, textiles and embroidery speaks of the relation of disconnect between the ideal self and reality to perceived notions of truth and beauty, while Mahmood’s conceptual foray into the limits of human psychology find expression in thought-provoking mixed media installations.
The show remains open daily until Thursday, 17th September 2020, from 11 am – 7 pm (except Sundays). We welcome your visits to our space throughout the show’s duration so please feel free to avail the opportunity to see this exciting collection of works.
