In Pakistan, there is only one artist who has been working on woodcuts and making prints from them for the last five decades. This is a huge effort to resuscitate a centuries old art that had its evolution in China and Japan. In the tradtional woodcuts, prints producted are alwas in one color. Mahboob Ali has brought about a revolution by producting prints of nearly one hundred colors. The process of cutting and gouging and chiseling is hard and demands labour of months. Thus the process requires patience and perseverance. Mahboob Ali cuts portraits, landscapes, street scenes and even Islamic calligraphy in his wood blocks.
